New Disclosure Requirements Approved By IASC Board In an effort to strengthen the IASC's certification program and assure customers of the authenticity of aloe products, the Science and Technology Committee developed new disclosure requirements for labeling, literature and other promotional advertising. All members of the IASC are now required to disclose the origin of their product and the identity and concentration of any non-aloe constituents in their products. These disclosures are required in all promotional literature, technical specifications and product labels. All members, regardless of whether the product is certified or not, must comply within 120 days of obtaining IASC membership or from date of issuance of this motion if already a member. Members applying for certification of products must supply examples of all labels and product literature with this information at the time of application. Specific disclosure required:
Origin: Disclosure includes: (1) Genus and species of aloe. (2) Nature of starting material, i.e., whole leaf or gel. For the purpose of definition, gel product originates only from leaf fillet containing no rind as a starting material. In other words, the gel designation cannot be placed on product made from whole leaf that has been diluted or otherwise processed to obtain a "gel" composition. Constituents: Preservatives, fillers, carriers, binders, bulking or thickening agents, or other natural products or extracts of plant origin, organic acids, other excipients used for any purpose whatsoever. Disclosure includes: (1) Name of the non-aloe constituent (IUPAC or trade name if commonly known and understood). (2) Concentration as a percentage of total product weight dry solids. (3) Purity of the constituent being added if less than 98%. |
